Where I think modern Christianity often falls down is as you say to see prayer as a spiritual shopping-list, not so much in terms of material goods but an expectation of emotional fulfilment. Relationships can be fulfilling but they can also be bloody hard work! I think my observation on your post is that it is very true, and that also Advent can have a scattered rainbow-effect of sending love and friendship all over the world through the nonsense and consumerism, which is also I think as important as the church piety.
